Governance and Leadership

Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health is a nonprofit, tax-exempt, charitable organization pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Incorporated and formerly based in Pennsylvania, Kripalu is now headquartered in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and is registered in Massachusetts as a public charity.

Like most nonprofits, Kripalu is governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees that is independent of management. The Board holds at least three regular meetings per year, overseen by a trustee who serves as Chair. Trustees serve for up to three terms of three years. New trustees are selected based upon their commitment to Kripalu’s mission; their professional skills, expertise and willingness to serve; and the financial resources, contacts and other resources they can bring to bear on furthering Kripalu’s mission.

The Board hires a Chief Executive Officer, who in turn hires Kripalu’s management and staff. In 2004, the Board hired Kripalu’s current Chief Executive Officer, Garrett Sarley (Dinabandhu). Garrett works in tandem with his wife and professional partner, Ila Sarley, who serves as President. The Sarleys were founding members of Kripalu and leaders of its resident community for more than 20 years. After serving in prominent roles at Omega Institute, the Sarleys returned to Kripalu and have assembled a management team and staff of considerable talent and experience.
